OSI Model
Understanding Networking Layers
Layer 1: Physical Layer
Metaphor: The Roads
Role: Provides the physical path (like roads or pathways) for the delivery vans to travel.
Layer 2: Data Link Layer
Metaphor: Local Delivery Van
Role: Like a local delivery van that carries the message within the sender's town using the local routes (using MAC addresses).
Layer 3: Network Layer
Metaphor: Long-Distance Courier System
Role: Determines the overall best path (using IP addresses) to get the message from the sender’s town to the recipient’s town, like a long-distance courier system.
Layer 4: Transport Layer
Metaphor:Message Integrity Checker
Role: Ensures all the parts of the message arrive intact and in order, like a checker who ensures all pages of the message are there and arranges them if they got mixed up.
Layer 5: Session Layer
Metaphor:Message Integrity Checker
Role: Like an organizer who ensures different topics (sessions) of a complex message are kept separate and organized, ensuring no mix-up between different parts of the conversation.
Layer 6:Language Translator and Cipher
Metaphor:Message Integrity Checker
Role:Ensures the message is translated and encoded or decoded so only the intended recipient can understand it, like a translator and cipher system.
Layer 7:Application Layer
Metaphor: Message Creator and Reader
Role:Like the person who writes the original message and the recipient who reads and understands it, enabling communication between applications.
Summary in a Story:
The road (Physical Layer) facilitates the journey. The local delivery van (Data Link Layer) takes your message to the long-distance courier office in your town. The long-distance courier system (Network Layer) decides the best route to the recipient’s town. The message integrity checker (Transport Layer) ensures all parts of the message are in place and in order. The conversation organizer (Session Layer) keeps different message topics or sessions distinct. The translator and cipher (Presentation Layer) ensure the message can be understood only by the recipient. The message creator and reader (Application Layer) create and understand the content of the message.
